Our process

We use a controlled, four-step process for every skull. Each one is handled and tracked individually from drop-off to pickup.

  1. Step 1: Beetle cleaning

    Your skull goes into our dermestid beetle colony, where the beetles work through the remaining tissue a little at a time — including inside the nasal passages, eye sockets, and other fine areas that are hard to reach by hand. We use beetles because they clean thoroughly without aggressive boiling, which helps protect thin bone and delicate structures.

  2. Step 2: Degreasing & cleaning

    Bone naturally holds oils that can discolor a mount over time. Each skull goes through a thorough cleaning and degreasing process to draw those oils and contaminants out of the bone before any whitening begins.

  3. Step 3: Professional whitening

    A professional whitening solution gives the bone a clean, bright finish. We apply it consistently so the color is even across the whole skull, while the antlers keep their natural color.

  4. Step 4: Final detail & inspection

    Before anything goes home, we inspect the mount closely, clean up any remaining residue, check the teeth and delicate bones, and finish it for display.

Any mount can be put on a wood plaque, ready to hang. Choose “Yes” for a plaque on the request form, and we’ll go over options when we call.
